Soaring through the trees This house evolved around the story of a human "perch" up in the branches of the trees, with birds as one’s neighbors. Our goal was to integrate the home into the natural environment as much as possible, so when you walk out onto the cantilevered balcony, you feel you have perched in the canopy of the beautiful, mature beech trees. The light strikes last only a few minutes each day, creating an ephemeral, but recurring art piece. As opposed to a drawing, a model allows the client to explore the space more fully and imagine themselves there. The use of this model allowed the clients to feel confident that the end result would work perfectly. Sometimes called “passive solar heating,” this is a cost-effective way to maximize the heat given off by the sun. Because of Myrna’s love of the sunrise, we placed the kitchen, and specifically the kitchen sink, on the eastern side of the main living space. To punctuate the location of the sink - the source of water - we broke the plane of the trellis with a tall windows. It is made of a locally fired red brick and has been restored beautifully. The barn and shed structures are all clad in black siding. To keep a sense of harmony and consistency throughout the compound, we decided to clad the new building with the same color. However, we played with the siding patterns to indicate that it was built at a different time. The fundamental tenant of the Episcopal faith is the belief in three considerations: Scripture… Tradition and Reason. The original Church - Built in 1962 - was oriented on an east/west axis. This axis was located using a compass. As a result the Church was positioned on a magnetic east/west axis. Because of the tenant of Reason, we looked to the technologies used to build today - GPS. The angle of the curvature of the new north wall of the addition is aligned on the geographic east/west axis - it then curves around to “face” the downtown of the Town of Oxford.
